Care Guide For Anthurium Purchase from Le Toro Jardin

Hi there, welcome to our new website – Le Toro Jardin. This article shares with you how to care for Anthuriums, especially plants purchased from Le Toro Jardin.

Steps to take care of the plants from they it was first received

  • Upon receiving a plant, please check its substrate. If the perlite is completely dry, give it a light shower. For acclimatization, put it in a spot with medium light and comfortable temperature. Ideally you can place the plant in a humidity dome, but a tied plastic bag works too. Take the plant out after one week.

Medium

  • Our anthuriums are planted in 100% perlite. This airy substrate promotes healthy root growth but needs to be watered regularly (daily or alternate days). We use liquid fertilizer for fast absorption and do not add any other form of nutrients to the substrate. If you consider growing the plant in the perlite it comes with, you may want to add slow-release fertilizer. If you are more comfortable with other growing media, you can change the substrate after the 1-week acclimatization period. To prevent transplant shock, provide the plant with high humidity (humidity dome/cabinet/plastic bag), medium light, and comfortable temperature.
  • If the medium is 100% perlite, place the plant on top of a shallow dish filled with water (about 1 cm / 0,4 inches). This will help with cooling the plant, increasing humidity, and promoting root growth.

Light, Temperature and huminity

  • Anthurium prefers medium to low light in the range of 300–800 FC (such as natural indirect light, or under a canopy/shade net). Aim for 10–12 hours light exposure of this intensity, daily. The right amount of light is essential to the plants’ development, aesthetic, and vigor.
  • There is a relationship between humidity and temperature for optimal foliage growth (see picture below – green zone is optimal). In general, when temperature rises, relative humidity needs to be higher so the growth is not compromised. You can increase humidity by using humidifiers or cooling pads, regularly misting the trays/the floor and putting large water containers around your growing area, etc.

Some other notes

  • Light affects water and nutrients uptake. In a low light environment, an abundance of water and nutrients may damage the root system. Adjust the watering and fertilizing schedule according to the light intensity and duration of your growing condition.
  • Avoid watering or misting at night. Water drops adhering to leaves can lead to foliar diseases and damage thoose leaves.
  • Grow light is a good addition when sunlight is not enough. However, the total duration of both light sources should not exceed 12–14 hours daily. Never expose a plant to 24 hours of light a day, as it disrupts the plant’s natural cycle.
